Social Housing Issues

Social Housing Issues

Key issues

Convincing people to rent

Canadians have always preferred to own their own homes, despite having some of the best
public housing stock in the world. Convincing people to rent is difficult and it also
increases the stress on the credit economy.

Negative perceptions

There is a negative perception towards diverting most of the housing assistance
funds towards public and private non-profit housing bodies.

Real estate bubble

There is concern that Canada has entered a real estate 'bubble’. This is concerning because
people are likely to turn to the government in the event that there is a market collapse.

Rent assistance

A growing number of people have indicated that they prefer rent/financial assistance
rather than being provided with quality housing stock.
